Sea Swimming Ear Care: Drying, Cleaning and GP Advice

October 16, 2026

Sea Swimming Ear Care Starts Before You Get In

You might be wondering how to protect your ears from cold and water when sea swimming. October dips can bring cold water, sharp wind and plenty of splashing, all of which may leave your ears feeling uncomfortable afterwards. That doesn’t mean every ache, pop or blocked feeling is an infection, but it is sensible to give your ears a little care.

A practical routine can include the SwimCell Ear Plugs to help stop water entering the ear canal, followed by either the SwimCell Neoprene Headband or SwimCell Neoprene Hat for warmth around the ears. The ear plugs are the water-focused part of the combination, while the neoprene accessories provide an outer layer against cold air, wind and surface splashes. Swimming ear protection can make a sea swim feel more comfortable, but it cannot promise that water will never enter your ears or replace medical advice when symptoms continue.

How to Protect Ears From Cold and Water

For cooler sea swims, a layered approach often feels most reassuring. SwimCell Ear Plugs are waterproof ear plugs designed to help stop water getting into the ear canal. The SwimCell Neoprene Headband provides 4mm thick neoprene coverage around the ears without covering the whole head, while the SwimCell Neoprene Hat gives neoprene coverage over both the head and ears.

A headband or hat is great for warmth, but it is not a replacement for correctly fitted SwimCell Ear Plugs if keeping water out is your main concern. Before you swim, make sure your chosen ear plugs feel secure and comfortable. They should not feel forced deeply into the ear.

Keep these points in mind when choosing swimming ear protection:

  • Fit SwimCell Ear Plugs gently, following the product guidance supplied with them ensuring your insert them into the correct ear and the correct way around.
  • Choose the SwimCell Neoprene Headband when you want neoprene ear coverage with your usual swim kit.
  • Choose the SwimCell Neoprene Hat when you would prefer coverage over your head as well as around your ears in colder conditions.
  • Combine all 3 for maximum warmth and ear protection.

Extra care is sensible if you have recently had ear surgery, have grommets, know you have a perforated eardrum, get recurring ear problems or already have ear symptoms. In those cases, we suggest asking your GP, audiologist or pharmacist about which protection is suitable before getting into the sea.

Choose Swimming Ear Protection That Suits Your Swim

If the feeling of water sitting in your ears spoils a good swim, SwimCell Ear Plugs are the most direct place to start. As waterproof ear plugs, they are the product in this range intended to help reduce the amount of water reaching your ears, making them a practical choice for regular dippers, open-water swimmers and anyone who would simply rather keep water out of the ear canal. Importantly they only muffle, not block sound so your safety isn’t compromised.

Cold wind can be just as bothersome as the water itself, especially when you are standing on the shore getting changed afterwards. This is where the SwimCell Neoprene Headband and SwimCell Neoprene Hat offer two different options. The headband concentrates its neoprene coverage around the ears and jaw, whereas the hat covers the head as well as the ears.

Your choice can be guided by what concerns you most:

  • For water entering the ear, begin with correctly fitted SwimCell Ear Plugs.
  • For wind around the ears, add the SwimCell Neoprene Headband or SwimCell Neoprene Hat.
  • For colder autumn swims, combine SwimCell Ear Plugs with the Neoprene Hat if you would like coverage over your head and ears.
  • For any discomfort, stop and adjust your kit before swimming out.

Rather than treating every swim in the same way, it helps to choose the SwimCell product that matches the conditions. Some people may be happy with SwimCell Waterproof Ear Plugs alone on a calmer day. Others may feel more comfortable adding the Neoprene Headband when wind is the main issue, or choosing the Neoprene Hat when they want more coverage in colder weather. The best choice is the one that sits comfortably and suits the way you swim.

Dry and Clean Ears Without Doing More Harm

Once you are out of the water, keep the aftercare simple. Remove your SwimCell Ear Plugs carefully, then gently dry the outside of each ear with a clean towel.

It can be tempting to poke about when an ear feels blocked, but this is where people can make matters worse. Ears are generally self-cleaning, and earwax has a useful protective role. Pushing items into the ear canal can irritate the skin or press wax further in.

Try to avoid:

  • Cotton buds pushed into the ear canal.
  • Fingers, hair grips or twisted tissues used to remove water.
  • Ear candles or attempts to dig out wax.
  • Ear drops, oils or homemade remedies used without professional advice.

Cleaning and drying SwimCell Ear Plugs in line with the instructions provided with the product is also important. Keeping them clean before packing them away is a straightforward part of good swimming ear protection hygiene. All our swimming ear plugs come with their own storage case. If you have pain, discharge, grommets, a perforated eardrum or previous ear surgery, ask a pharmacist or clinician before using drops or other ear products.

Know When to Pause and Speak to a GP

A mild watery sound or temporary blocked feeling may settle after careful drying and a little time. Pain, worsening discomfort or symptoms that keep returning deserve more attention. If your ears feel sore or inflamed, take a break from sea swimming rather than trying to push through another session.

Contact your GP practice, NHS 111 or another appropriate healthcare professional if you notice ear pain that does not improve, discharge, bleeding, fever, reduced hearing, ringing that persists, marked dizziness or swelling around the ear. Seeking advice early can help you understand when it is safe to return to open-water swimming and whether SwimCell Ear Plugs are appropriate for you.

This is general information, not personal medical advice. A clinician can assess your individual situation and advise on any care or treatment you may need.

Make Ear Care Part of Every Sea Swim

A calm routine can make chilly sea sessions feel easier. Before leaving home, make sure your SwimCell Ear Plugs are clean and dry, then pack either the SwimCell Neoprene Headband for ear coverage or the SwimCell Neoprene Hat for coverage over your head and ears or both if you want to keep really warm. At the shore, fit your ear plugs before entering the water and check that your chosen neoprene layer sits comfortably.

Choose Comfortable Coverage For Your Next Swim

For added warmth and coverage around the ears, our swimming ear protection is a practical choice for regular sea swimmers. The 4mm neoprene headband helps cover the ears without the full coverage of a hat, so you can choose what feels right for your swim. At SwimCell, we make accessories designed with open-water comfort in mind. If you need help choosing, contact us and our team will be happy to help.
